Calculating total cost of ownership
As the UK progresses with decarbonizing the HGV sector, the total cost of ownership (TCO) and environmental benefits of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) will influence each HGV operator's decision on when to switch to electric powertrains.
Larger eHGVs are only just coming to market, and they can cost significantly more to purchase than equivalent diesel trucks, while the carbon emitted from manufacture and use differs significantly between diesel trucks and eHGVs. This can make it difficult for fleet operators to navigate the uncertainty as the market evolves.
That’s why we’ve developed a simple, interactive comparison tool designed to help you evaluate the pros and cons of fleet electrification from both commercial and environmental perspectives.

The power of data
We believe clear, data-driven insights are key to making informed decisions. Through the Electric Freightway project, we are demonstrating the use of eHGVs on a wide range of routes across the UK, generating valuable evidence on their real world performance.
This tool builds on those learnings to highlight both the cost and environmental efficiency of eHGVs.
Using real-world data and your chosen operating profile (mileage, ownership length, route types and payloads), the tool compares two new 40–44t HGVs — one electric and one diesel — and provides a year-on-year breakdown of estimated cost and carbon footprint across a five-year lifecycle.
